In the fascinating CAMOSENSE project, we’ve been helping researchers unlock the secrets of moths’ natural camouflage using our Polytec MSA-060 Micro System Analyzer.
Moths face a unique challenge—during the day, they hide from birds visually, and at night, they avoid bats through acoustic stealth.
Many moth species are covered in specialized hairs that absorb ultrasonic waves, making them “invisible” to bats’ echolocation.
Our precision measurements with the MSA-060 reveal how the habitat—whether a dense forest or open field—directly affects the dynamic response of these hairs, providing crucial insight into how their camouflage works.
By analyzing the visual and acoustic characteristics of moths in different environments, researchers can better understand how camouflage adapts to avoid predators like birds and bats.
